Chapter 5
What Biblical Events Accompany The Millenium?

While God is preparing a people for eternal life, Satan is walking about, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:8) He knows that his time on Earth is short and that His existence and sin will soon come to an end. We are warned again and again in Scripture that many will be deceived and deluded in "the last days." The delusions will become more convincing and at the same time less discernible. If possible, even the elect will be deceived. (Matthew 24:24) We would be wise to notice that what spoken of here is deception brought about through false Christs, many of them, and with these false Christs, come false teachings both about Him, and as though they come from Him. We can only know the true Christ and answer to His voice if we truly know Him. Our only hope is in knowing the Christ of Scripture and Him who sent Him. (John 17:3) In John 10:3, 4, 5, 16, and 27, Jesus explains very clearly that those who know His voice will follow Him when He speaks and will not hear the voice of strangers. But Satan has had 6,000 years to prepare the world for these deceptions and they will be very deceptive. We are told in 2Corinthians 11:14 that Satan will even be "transformed into an angel of light.”

The comparison between the works of the flesh and the works of the spirit revealed in Galatians 5:19-21 and 22-23 (respectively) will be manifested more and more as the day of the Lord draws near. Satan will gain to his side all that he can deceive and Christ will simultaneously gather His people to Himself. Christ, however, will gather under the banner of love and truth, while Satan will gain influence through deceit and deception.

The Bible is very clear on the following issues (topics). It is not left with us to determine the outcome of the great conflict the is going on between Christ and Satan, but it is left for us to decide upon whose side we will be when Christ comes again to take His people home. He is coming again, and the following will occur according to God's word and not according to the ideas and imagining of men.

In Revelation chapter twenty, is introduced a period of one thousand years. Here, and elsewhere in Scripture is found numerous references to what takes place at the beginning of, during, and after this millennial span of time.

What happens at the beginning of the millennium?

  1. The resurrection of the righteous dead (Those who are asleep in Jesus). 1Thessalonians 4:15 & 16; Revelation 20:6.

  2. The rising (ascension) of the righteous living. 1Thessalonians 4:17.

  3. The wicked are destroyed by the brightness of His coming. 2Thessalonians 1:7, 8; 2:8; Jeremiah 25:31-33.

  4. The righteous are received unto Jesus. John 14:23.

  5. Satan is bound (for a thousand years) Revelation 20:1-6. (See also 2Peter 2:4; 1Corinthians 15:51-57.)

What is going on during the millennial period?

  1. The earth is desolate — a bottomless pit. Jeremiah 4:23-27 and consider, again 2Peter 2:4) What brings this about?

The earth is made desolate by a series of events; the seven last plagues bringing about final devastation, climaxing with the awesome event of Christ's return when all the wicked are destroyed by fire and the earth is broken up by a great earthquake.

The expression "bottomless pit" means a place of chaos, darkness, or desolation, and is translated “abyss” from the Greek word abusos.

The same word is used in the Septuagint Version of the Old Testament in Genesis 1:2 and Jeremiah 4:23-25, where the earth is pictured as “without form, and void.”

  2. The wicked are all dead. (See point 3 above.)
  3. Satan is thus "bound" on a desolate earth.
Satan is said to be bound because there is no one left to tempt and harass, except the fallen angels, of course, but they are all aware of the results of following Satan; they are all aware of the end to which he has led them.
  4. The righteous are engaged in a work of judgment in Heaven. (See 1Corinthians 6:1-3 and Revelation 20: 4-6.)
The Bible clearly teaches that the saved will have a part in the judgment, but it might be asked, “Why is a judgment needed if everyone has already been judged as either wicked or righteous, and are either dead on the earth or in heaven with Jesus. Besides, at the second comming of Christ He brings His rewards with Him.” (See Revelation 22:12; Matthew 16:27; Colossians 3:24)

At the end of the millennium the wicked are raised to receive the rewards of their works on the earth. Those who resisted and rejected every redemptive effort of a loving, long-suffering God meet their final destiny. Just how will God deal with those who have rejected His every effort to save them from this death? Can we be assured that God will make a right judgment in every case?

Suppose you had a very dear friend on earth, but after arriving in heaven, you look all over and he or she is not to be found. Questions may arise in your mind about God's decision as to whether He was correct in His judgment of this individual. During the millennium you will have the opportunity to find out how God has dealt with his/her case and the cases of all others. You will be clearly shown the wisdom of God in not violating the free will of one soul on Earth. Although God is not willing that any should perish, those who chose a path contrary to His will, will find themselves shut out, by there own choice, from his presence. God will not run the risk of having one single doubt linger in the minds of His people, and He will, therefore, not violate the free will of one single individual. That He has been faithful in His work of saving fallen man from the final destruction in the lake of fire, there won't be one single question in one single mind of the saved. (Revelation 20:14&15; 21:8) In addition to this, God must also prove faithful in His promise that Sin will not arise a second time.

What happens at the end of the millennium?

Let's read the answer to this question straight from scripture.

  1. The wicked are raised. Revelation 20:5.

  2. Satan is loosed to deceive. Revelation 20:7.

  3. The Holy City, New Jerusalem, descends from out of Heaven. Revelation 21:2.

  4. Satan gathers the wicked about the Holy City. Revelation 20:8, 9.

  5. The wicked are destroyed — death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:9; Revelation 20:14.

  6. A new heaven and a new earth are created. Revelation 21:1-5; 2 Peter 3:10-14.

Food for Thought: Who inherits New Jerusalem? (See Galatians 3:29; Revelation 21:7.)
