Spirit of Prophecy Excerpts ~ Prophetic Fulfillment Prior to Christ's Return from the writings of Ellen Gould Harmon White |

In Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 9, p. 11 we are instructed, “Through the working of trusts and the results of labor unions and strikes, the conditions of life in the cities are constantly becoming more and more difficult. “The intense passion for money getting, the thirst for display, the luxury and extravagance—all are forces that, with the great mass of mankind, are turning the mind from life's true purpose. They are opening the door to a thousand evils. Many, absorbed in their interest in worldly treasures, become insensible to the claims of God and the needs of their fellow men. They regard their wealth as a means of glorifying self. They add house to house and land to land; they fill their homes with luxury, while all about them are human beings in misery and crime, in disease and death. “By every species of oppression and extortion, men are piling up colossal fortunes, while the cries of starving humanity are coming up before God. There are multitudes struggling with poverty, compelled to labor hard for small wages, unable to secure the barest necessities of life. Toil an privation, with no hope of better things, make their burden heavy. When pain and sickness are added, the burden is almost unbearable. Careworn and oppressed, they know not where to turn for relief.” And on page 91 of this same volume we find, “The Scriptures describe the condition of the world just before Christ's Second Coming. James, the apostle, pictures the greed and oppression that will prevail. He says: 'Go to now, ye rich men. . . . Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.'” James 5:1-6. “This is a picture of what exists today. 'Judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey.'” Isaiah 59:14, 15. We are told to avoid labor unions, why? In Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 141 & 142, the Christian’s relationship to the labor issue is addressed thus: Avoiding Labor Conflicts * “The time is coming when the controlling power of the labor unions will be very oppressive. Again and again the Lord has instructed that our people are to take their families away from the cities, into the countries, where they can raise their provisions; for in the future the problem of buying and selling will be a very serious one. We should now begin to heed the instruction given us over and over again: Get out of the cities into rural districts, where the houses are not crowded closely together, and where you will be free from the interference of enemies—Letter 5, 1904. Avoid Party Strifes “Men have confederated to oppose the Lord of hosts. These confederacies will continue until Christ shall leave His place of intercession before the mercy seat, and shall put on the garments of vengeance. Satanic agencies are in every city, busily organizing into parties those opposed to the law of God. Professed saints and avowed unbelievers take their stand with these parties. This is no time for the people of God to be weaklings. We cannot afford to be off our guard for a moment.” — Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 8, p. 42 (1904). Conflicts Between Trade Confederacies and Labor Unions “The work of the people of God is to prepare for the events of the future, which will soon come upon them with blinding force. In the world gigantic monopolies will be formed. Men will bind themselves together in unions that will wrap them in the folds of the enemy. A few men will combine to grasp all the means to be obtained in certain lines of business. Trade unions will be formed, and those who refuse to join will be marked men. Preparing for the Issue “The trade unions and confederacies of the world are a snare. Keep out of them, and away from them, brethren. Have nothing to do with them. Because of these unions and confederacies, it will soon be very difficult for our institutions to carry on their work in the cities. My warning is: Keep out of the cities.... Educate our people to get out of the cities into the country, where they can obtain a small piece of land, and make a home for themselves and their children....” Webmaster's Comments: Today's free trade agreements and the “few men” that are combining to “grasp all the means to be obtained in certain lines of business,” make it clear that the work of Satan continues to unfold and the confederacies are spoken of, today, as conspiratorial plots. The players in the game are more and more easily recognized, just as is the Man of Sin, who is being revealed, as promised in 2Thessalonians 2:3 “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (1Timothy 6:10) There are many other warnings and admonitions concerning labor unions and confederations in the writings of God’s messenger to His last day people. God knew how the world would be in the last days, and he has not left us without counsel in every respect of our preparation. He knew that politics and finance would be issues that would greatly affect and afflict His people. Many will suffer at the hand of others. Some will be imprisoned, some tortured, and some killed. (Please see Matthew Chapter 24. Some will spend so much time in political and financial endeavors that they have no time for Him; no time for salvation. Times will be specifically hard for the Christian relative to two different positions. 1) If we become involved in these endeavors and become "unequally yoked together with unbelievers," it will be extremely difficult to break those ties when the time of trouble arrives. 2) To break those ties could prove profoundly perilous to ones temporal well-being, but if one chooses to maintain those ties, it will prove to be eternally perilous.
